Me in Assam - 1

Please note this entire series of observations are not to point out or blame the authorities but to show lack of related skills training at various levels, causing loss of property and confidence of youth to do things or to stand on their own feet. I am exposing those individuals who tried to stop or insult me for Skill Development activities.

It was a day like any other lazy days at my Pune residence, month of August 2015. I was surfing net and started reading about Late Eknathji Ranade the main founder of Vivekanand Memorial and Vivekanand Kendra at Kanyakumari. I was interested to know more because present government promoting the North East region. I was reading the page of VKV that is Vivekanand Kendra Vidyalaya in Assam and Arunachal state. On 8 August 2015, I wrote an email to info@vkspv.org. The subject was my idea of Skill Development, Techno Club with Stage or event Management Training.

Skill Development - To carry out any activity logically with certain objective is skill. The teenage years are the right time to start any activity, could be  transformed as skill for self sufficiency and at latter stage may be a profession. To know and maintain house hold appliances or devices, such as Kitchen appliances, washing machine, dish washer, vaccum cleaner, refrigerator, residential electrical wiring, drinking water or west water management etc. are helpful skills. These skills could be developed as professional services to community, could make a person self employed.

Techno Club - provides platform to learn routine activities as a skill in school environment.  Stage or event managements, planning, lighting, sound, photo, video, making presentations of any topic, etc are the skills for secondary or higher secondary school children.

I have acquired variety of skills during 50 years of hands on experience, even as a trainer in various skills. My 35 years of working in many countries allowed me to gain varied experiences. If possible I would like to share this experience through VKV Assam and a meeting was arranged with concerned authorities in Mumbai on 25 August 2015. The travel plan was decided on 04/09/2015.

7 October 2015 at 2:30 pm I left Pune, reached Lokmanya Tilak Terminal Kurla station around 6:00 pm. The train #12151 for Howrah, Samarasta Express left Kurla at 8:35 pm. The 3 tire A/C coach was much comfortable. Fellow passengers were Sindhi, Gujrati, and Haryanvi, very talkative, well settled people.  Around 11:00 pm I slept. First time in my life I was travelling to Howrah. Train 12151 to Howrah had TravelTime: 35h 50m,  22halts,   Distance: 2074 km.

Next day from morning as if experts on many subject we spent good time in discussion. The subject were opening like lighting from one to other candle. We Had a lot to eat, drink many cups of tea and coffee. One by one fellow passenger reached their destinations. I reached Howrah on right time 8:25 am that was on 09/10/2015. At station there was newly joined volunteer to take me to Head office of Vivekanand Kendra West Bengal state. This place was used as residence by Late Eknathji Ranade.

I manage to capture this video clip in short time.

I left that office with the same volunteer around 3:30 pm to catch the train from Howrah Junction to Dibrugarh,   Kamrup Express #15959.  Travel Time: 36h 10m,   54halts,  Distance:1532 kms.

09/10/2015 sharp at 5.35 pm the Kamrup Express left the Howrah station. This time the coach was not A/C but general 3 tier sleeper, so that all sorts of passengers were there. From Howrah there was a school team of 25 Boxers returning to Dimapur. Through out the night they were very noisy. Next day from early morning it became more disturbing the sleeper arrangements turned as sitting and unreserved passengers of short distance travel were coming in and just pushing the reserved birth passengers to sitting arrangements, causing lot of heated arguments. The hawkers were causing more noise.

Some where 2 pm at one station a male passenger with his lady friend came in. I had spread my legs to take a nap but these two new comers made me to fold my legs, sat on my birth. He had lot of bags and trophies with sales tags. That man was talking on top of his voice using his phone. After about 1 hour of talking to different people with the phone he started talking to me. He was a multi tasking man, a Assam police CID officer, a owner of cosmetic & medicine distribution company, distributer for MNC products and many more trades and activities. But surprisingly all alone he was carrying so much extra luggage without any colleague or helper. He was going to take that accompanied lady to some ones place or hotel room. Finally around 5 they both got down at one station.

Around 10 pm the Boxer team got down at Dimapur with more commotion. A fellow passenger was sitting at window seat, listening song from his mobile, when train started moving that same  time some one from outside pulled his mobile. He started shouting, the police came but no help to that man who lost his mobile. Then I heard adjacent coach passenger shouting about their lost luggage at same time. I heard stories of notoriety of Dimapur railway station for 1 hour.

I went in to sleep. Woke up with a dream, some one taken my luggage,  ran out and I was chasing that person. The time was 4:30 am, out side light was bright for that time in the morning. I could see from track to long distances only Tea gardens. The road was next to railway track, pot holes on that road reminded me of Pune roads. around 6:00 I got down at New Dibrugarh station. Out side volunteer of APT was waiting for me to take me to APT or Arunachal Pradesh Trust office.

The building is very neat and clean place on the shore of Brahmaputra river. I had breakfast, lunch and dinner at that place some where in the night I had stroke of sever acidity, too mush vomiting I started loosing my balance. Yet late night with the help of Dates, Resin Milk and Banana some how brought my balance back and slept in that condition.

Next on 12.10.2015 in the evening I was taken to VKV or Vivekanand Kendra Vidyalaya, Dibrugarh, Assam. During introduction with the Principal I was observing the face and body language of that person, my first impression was very alarming, the person should not be trusted, his eyes behind the thick lenses and his smile at that time were very tricky. Yet I came with a program to share my experiences with those who are willing to know skills and learn. I put it other way “give food to the person who is hungry and searching, other wise indigestion may happen!!!” Not related to professional cheaters and beggars.

Anyway, it was decided my first destination is VKV / DBG to learn the system, functions and people in that region from 12/10/2015. Next four days I was very weak, could not walk proper, with the help of Dates, Resin Milk, Banana and 3 tablets for Vertigo I managed to get my balance back. But a kind of different cold was effecting my health. I had experience in staying and working in -20 degree climate of Iran at age 28 - 32 years but now at the age of 67 I was loosing resistance to change of conditions in Assam. The blankets and worm clothes were always feeling wet and cold because of very high humid conditions, that was causing knee pain, ankle pain, joint pains.

My health condition affected my presence in that school. The staff member started commenting “what this old man going to do here and teach us?” One middle age teacher directly asked me “what for you came here to Assam all the way from Pune? Here we do not need people from out side Assam to teach us any thing. We are trying last 20 years to make some change, but no use.”  This gone very much ahead among the staff members. It so happened a team of players were leaving for a competition and principal asked me to take a photo for newspaper. I was arranging sitting arrangement for good framing of the group. I overheard a comment from a teacher who was official photographer of the school. I could not follow the meaning but heard a laughter. I asked a by stander to tell me in Hindi. The comment was “what this old man going to do who can not stand properly.” God please save these children from such teachers.

It so happened principal asked to show the photo from both the digital cameras, the group liked the photo taken by me, not the photo taken by that teacher. I think principal had also heard the comment made by that teacher so he asked me “what is the difference in these two frames?” I pointed out “the teacher has taken wide angle and the group became small in the frame, I have taken like a portrait so Heads and Knees, also asked to bend the neck a little to avoid light reflections in the spectacles.” He told to that teacher “learn from experienced photographer!”.

This is how my work started in that school with bumpy ride. Hope to see you in the next post…….
